Chandigarh : The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) and all its sitting MLAs in the state on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the Union government to exempt agriculture land from wealth tax and expressed deep gratitude to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram for protecting the interests of forming community.

In a joint statement issued here, the Congress leaders said that it was victory of the Congress party, which took a firm stand in favour of farming community.

They asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to show statesmanship in bringing a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha during its emergency session called on May 3 to express gratitude to the UPA government for the ‘landmark decision.’

“The Congress party was first to raise the issue of wealth tax and later the SAD-BJP government tried to hijack the issue for getting political mileage,” they said.

They added that though BJP kept silence on the issue, the SAD leaders blew the issue out of proportion to divert the attention of people from the core issues of property tax, hike in power tariff, law and order, illegal mining and corruption.
