1,321 file papers for zila parishad elections

Chandigarh : As many as 1,321 candidates of various political parties and Independents have filed their nomination papers for 331 zila parishad seats. For the 2,732 seats of panchayat samitis, 10,085 candidates have filed their papers. Today was the last day for filing nominations.

After the scrutiny of papers tomorrow, withdrawals will be accepted on May 9.

Polling to elect members of 22 zila parishads and 146 block samitis will be held on May 19 and counting on May 21. For the zila parishad elections, 91 candidates have filed nomination papers in Jalandhar district, 83 in Gurdaspur, 42 in Mohali, 81 in Amritsar, 54 in Bathinda and 53 in Barnala. In Ferozepur district, 49 candidates have filed their papers, in Faridkot 44, Fazilka 49, Hoshiarpur 86, Kapurthala 39, Ludhiana 82, Moga 58, Muktsar 45, Mansa 60, Patiala 81, Pathankot 33, Ropar 44, Sangrur 98, Nawanshar 46 and Tarn Taran 55. For the panchayat samiti elections, 596 candidates have filed their papers in Amritsar district, 239 in Mohali, 452 in Bathinda,188 Barnala and 421 in Ferozepur.

As many as 223 candidates have filed their papers in Faridkot, 324 in Fazilka, 298 Fatehgarh Sahib, 664 Gurdaspur, 708 Hoshiarpur, 776 Jalandhar and 336 Kapurthala. In Ludhiana district 791 candidates, Moga 453, Muktsar 364, Mansa 356, Patiala 641, Pathankot 276, Ropar 337, Sangrur 727 and Nawanshahr 384 and Tarn Taran 531 candidates have filed their papers.

Campaigning

The parties will launch their campaign after withdrawals on May 9. The Congress has reached an understanding with the Sanjha Morcha in some districts.

The SAD and the BJP are contesting the elections jointly. the SAD has allocated more than 30 zila parishad seats to the BJP in various districts.
