Cong wins 4 zones in Jalandhar

JALANDHAR: The SAD secured supremacy in 21 members zila parishad house winning 16 out of 21 zones in the district, while rival Congress candidates bagged four zones, results of which were declared here on Tuesday evening. Counting of votes in Bundala zone was on at the time of filing of this report.
Interestingly, the three women candidates from the ruling partywere declared elected unopposed. They include Balbir Kaur from Behram Sarishta, Baljit Kaur from Pholriwal and Harjinder Kaur from Dhandowal. Sources said that the rival Congress candidates in these three zones were reportedly made to withdraw from the contest or their nomination papers were not found in order by the poll authorities.
The Congress managed to secure only four seats.
Meanwhile, the ruling SADBJP combine had also created history by bagging majority in the Phillaur block samiti for the first time since independence.
Chief parliamentary secretary and Phillaur MLA Avinash Chander played a significant role in winning 16 out of 25 zones in Phillaur.
SHAHKOT CLEAN SWEEP
SHAHKOT: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has sweeped the Shahkot block samiti polls, winning 14 of the 15 zones, with the Congress managing to win one. Two candidates were elected unopposed.
SAD TAKES LOHIAN KHAS
MEHATPUR: The SAD was declared victorious in 12 of the 15 block samitis, elections for which were held for the first time. The Mehatpur block samiti was carved out from the Nakodar block in 2012. Tehsildar and returning officer Bhupinder Singh said 12 candidates from SAD, two from the Congrees and an independent had emerged victorious.
RECOUNTING ORDERED
Results of Nurmahal block samiti’s 15 zones could not be declared till 9 pm, as recounting was ordered in some zones.
