AMRITSAR: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa today paid rich tributes to veteran CPI leader Satpal Dang who died on June 18 last. The ritual ceremony of departed soul was held today at his native place in Chhehrata near here.
While recalling contribution of Dang in bringing social justice, Bajwa said that Dang was a movement himself within the left movement. He described him a relentless fighter and 'Messiah' of the poor and down trodden. He said that Dang and his late wife Mrs. Vimla Dang had fought hard against communal forces during peak of terrorism when many political leaders had vanished from scene. Dang took principal stand against militancy and dared the threats from terrorists.
Bajwa said that fundamentalist forces are ruling Punjab for the last seven years and Punjab was lagging behind in all spheres. He appealed to all secular forces to come together to defeat communal forces. He said that it was duty of secular political parties to protect the nation from falling in the hands of communal elements. He said that Punjab must take lead in it and it will be true tribute to Satpal Dang.
He said that after migrating from Pakistan during partition in 1947 Dang worked for the Hindi-Sikh unity and protected many Muslims families. He had also prepared an exhaustive list of Hindus and Sikhs who had saved Muslims during the Partition.
Bajwa said that communist leader was a journalist in himself. He was writing regularly on current issues in various newspapers. He and his wife Vimla Dang had made tremendous contribution to safe guard the interests of poor and working class. He later also became MLA and minister in the United Front government in 1967.
He said that Dang couple had made a major sacrifice for the welfare of humanity and decided not to have a child as they did not want to divert their attention from people’s struggle. He said that Dang had set parameter of morality for whole society by returning Padma Bhushan conferred on him in 1998 on the plea that a person's contribution to society is judged by his deeds and not by honors.
