No poll likely for 27 panchayats

Fatehgarh Sahib : Panchayats of at least 27 villages of the district may be elected unanimously. Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri said 15 panchayats in Bassi Pathanan block, seven in Khera, two in Amloh and three in Khamanon could be elected without any contest, though the official announcement would be made only after the withdrawal of nomination papers.
Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra said that more than 25 per cent of the panches have already been elected unopposed and 10 per cent sarpanches too have been elected unopposed in the state.
726 nominations for sarpanches
Barnala : As many as 726 candidates have filed nominations for the post of sarpanch and 2,662 for panch in Barnala district. On Monday, the nominations for the general elections for panchayat elections were scrutinised.
This was disclosed by District election officer-cum- Deputy Commissioner Indu Malhotra. She said that 364 polling booths have been set up for the elections.
