MUKTSAR/CHANDIGARH: In a bid to make his presence felt in Punjab state politics, senior Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar has begun a tour of the state with a visit to Maan village in Lambi assembly constituency of Muktsar district.

Accompanied by his supporters, Brar went around the village and met the victims of alleged police excesses committed during the local bodies elections on May 19. The village forms part of the constituency of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and during poll violence, as many as 125 Congress workers were booked by the local police.

This was Brar’s second visit to the village, where he said that most of the male members have fled because of fear of arrest by the police, only women and children are left. Earlier, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Partap Singh Bajwa had also toured the village.

In an interaction with the media, Brar appealed to the chief minister to visit the village in order to normalize the situation. He said that Badal should rise above politics and meet the residents of the village, which is hardly three kilometers from his own residence, to work out a compromise. Brar said that he was surprised to note that there had been no change in the situation in the village even though the incidents of violence took place more than a month ago. Police was still hunting for Congress workers.

It may be recalled here that two-time MP Brar, who was recently removed from the permanent membership of the Congress Working Committee had announced that he had shifted base from Delhi to Muktsar and will now play an active role in state politics.
