CHANDIGARH: Manish Tewari, Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Ludhiana MP has categorically stated that he would seek reelection to the lok sabha from Ludhiana lok sabha seat in 2014 general elections. Thus he has put at rest all speculation that he is eyeing Chandigarh lok sabha seat. Following the railgate scam in which nephew of Chandigarh MP and former railway minister Pawan Bansal was involved and had to resign, there was speculation that Manish Tewari may contest from Chandigarh seat.

Manish has made it clear that he has been serving the people of Ludhiana parliamentary constituency since his first contested the lok sabha elections in 2004, when he lost to the Akali Dal candidate Sharanjit Singh Dhillon. But he avenged this defeat in Gurcharan Singh Galiv in 2009 by a margin of over one lakh votes.

Manish Tewari has been looking after the interests of Ludhiana ever since he came to this industrial capital of Punjab in 2004. First he got a special grant of Rs. 50 crore for the cleaning of budha nulla and then brought Jai Ram Ramesh, Union Minister for Environment (then) to Ludhiana to personally look into the problem of pollution of budha nulla. However, the problem of pollution of the budha nulla has remained the same because of the lukewarm attitude of the Punjab Government. The Punjab Government even could not spend Rs. 50 crore meant for the cleaning of budha nulla and spent the same amount somewhere else.

During the central budget for the year 2013-2014, Manish succeeded in getting the central excise duty on cotton textile abolished which was 13 percent and has brought a big relief to the textile industry. Textile industry of Ludhiana employs lakhs of workers who are mostly migrants from UP, Bihar and other eastern states.

At present, Manish is in a better position and any thought of changing the seat will not be advisable he understands it himself to well.
