CHANDIGARH: A delegation of Congress MLAs, MPs and PPCC office bearers met both Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh under the leadership of Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa and CLP leader Sunil Jakhar.
The delegation thanked both the leaders for taking a historical step in implementing right to food. The act is historic as it reflects confidence in the ability of farmers to produce its people and show to world that India has move from days of starvation and deprivation to era of nutrition and progression.
Jakhar expressed that this act will take care of the hunger but GOI must ensure that the farmers who will make all this possible must continue to get remunerative prices for their produce and that farming must be transformed into a profitable occupation. The MSP of Wheat and rice must regularly be revised to keep it in sync with cost of inputs.
He further added that experience in Punjab shows that central schemes in Punjab have been abused regularly to get political Mileage by Akali-BJP government. Huge quantities of wheat and kerosene meant for BPL and APL families have been sold in the open market in the present Akali-BJP regime.
Despite exposing it by the CLP the Government of Punjab has destined the inquiry into this to cold storage. GOI must ensure that for food to reach the destined poor , it must put revamped distribution and monitoring network in place both at the central and at the state level.
The delegation pressed the need to put in place industrial package at par with the neighboring states of Himachal and Jammu Kashmir, if their package is renewed beyond the period of sunset clause.
Punjab MLA's donated their one month salary Congress President Relief Fund for Uttarakahand relief operations.
