CHANDIGARH: That the politicians take political mileage out of people’s misery is understandable and they can lie about such miseries is also not new. But it is rarely that a lie is caught so soon. This happened with the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab vis-a-vis the Sikh farmers of Gujarat who are fighting a legal battle against their arbitrary eviction by the Gujarat government after having bought the land and lived there for about 50 years.
As about 1000 odd Sikh farmers from Gujarat are camping in New Delhi to defend their rights in the Supreme Court as the Gujarat government has appealed against the Gujarat High Court order, maverick politician, and for some time now an Akali leader, Balwant Singh Ramoowalia rushed to the media claiming that the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had raised the matter with his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi and had written a letter to him, while only next day Badal said, he did not know exact reason behind the problem.
Ramoowalia said on July 31, as reported in Tribune on August 1, 2013, “I have sought time to meet Narendra Modi. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has written a letter to him (Narendra Modi)”.
However, very next day, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal told reporters at Amritsar, as again quoted in Tribune, “we will take up the matter with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. At present, we don't know the exact reason behind the Punjabi farmers' woes. We will soon send someone to Gujarat to get to the bottom of the matter. It is our duty to protect the interests of Sikh families”.
From Badal’s statement at Amritsar, it is clear that he did not know exactly what was the actual problem in Gujarat, so there was no point of his having written a letter to Modi as claimed by Ramoowalia in New Delhi only a day before.
This only points to the fact as how the politicians across the board try to seek political mileage out of people’s misery. But surprisingly Ramoowalia was trying to seek the mileage without anything having been done. And Ramoowalia is not known not be doing things like that.
