CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Chief Minister and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh will attend a function being organised by the Umeed Foundation to honour the freedom fighters and to commemorate the birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi and the death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal at Sangrur tomorrow.
According to Arvind Khanna, the Chairman Umeed Foundation and MLA Dhuri, this is an annual feature of Umeed and the function is held every year for the last 14 years to commemorate together the birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi and the death anniversary of late Sant Harchand Singh Longowal both of whom had sacrificed their lives for the unity and integrity of the country.
Moreover, Khanna pointed out, if Punjab is peaceful today, it is due to the Rajiv-Longowal Accord that laid down the foundations for peace in Punjab. “Unfortunately Sant Harchand Singh Longowal had to pay a heavy price with his life for the same”, he remarked.
He said, keeping in view the great sacrifice of the Sant Ji, Umeed was holding a function and the greatest tribute to him would be to hold it together with the birth anniversary of late Rajiv Ji, together with whom he scripted the story of peace for Punjab.
Khanna said, former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh will honour the freedom fighters, their families and various social organisations who are working for the uplift and betterment of the society.
