CHANDIGARH: Asserting that there was a strong groundswell against the Akali-BJP government in the state, former Chief Minister and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh today asked the party cadres to strengthen Congress in the state to ensure sweeping victory in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
In an informal interaction with the party leaders from across the state, who included sitting and former legislators, leaders from the youth Congress, National Students Union of India, districts presidents and others, Capt Amarinder advised them to ensure that there was no confusion or misunderstanding about the fact that the Congress was a united force in the state.
The former Chief Minister was clear and categorical in his assertion that each and every party worker and leader has to strengthen the Punjab Congress at any cost and nobody should have any doubts about that.
The CWC member said, he wanted to meet the party leaders from across the state in order to have a feedback from the grassroots. He said, people complained about the government excesses by the Akalis. One of the leaders even compared the Akali excesses with the dark days of terrorism saying that the Akalis had let lose a reign of terror on them.
The party leaders also urged him to ensure that the state government was not allowed to sell the centrally sponsored schemes as their own. He said, from the impression he gathered from the feedback there is no development and the state had been pushed to virtual bankruptcy and there was a groundswell against the government.
Responding to the demands of the party leaders Capt Amarinder said, he will be touring the state and mobilising the cadres to strengthen the party in Punjab. He pointed out, the parliamentary elections were just few months away and there was need to strengthen the party at every level and every leader and worker had a role and responsibility in it.
