Chandigarh : Former Chief Minister and a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee, Capt Amarinder Singh, today hailed the passage of the Food Security Bill and the Land Acquisition Bill in Parliament saying these will change the destiny of crores of people across the country.

In a statement issued here, Capt Amarinder congratulated UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the historic legislations, which seek to secure and safeguard the rights of the farmers and landowners on the one hand and eradicating hunger from the country on the other hand.

Referring to the Land Acquisition Bill, the former Chief Minister pointed out the earlier law enacted 120 years ago in 1894 had lost its relevance.

He said the new Act, while keeping provision for proper and transparent acquisition of land, watches and safeguards the interests of farmers and ensures they get four times of the market price in rural areas and twice in urban areas. Besides, it had measures for relief and rehabilitation of the landowners as also those who are dependent on the land, he said.

On the Food Security Bill, Capt Amarinder maintained that it will ensure that nobody remained hungry in the country. He said it was probably the biggest ever welfare law enacted anywhere in the world that sought to provide highly subsidised food to about 80 crore people.
