CHANDIGARH: Senior Punjab Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Wednesday slammed Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for heaping praises on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi while participating in the inaugural session of ‘ Vibrant Gujarat Global Agriculture Summit-2013’ in Gandhinagar recently.

Bhattal said that let Modi first withdraw the case his government had filed in the Supreme Court against the Sikh farmers to be worthy of any such title.

A large number of Sikh farmers and their families who had migrated to Gujarat from Punjab and other neighbouring states more than 40 years ago have been contesting against the Gujarat government’s decision to freeze their agricultural lands which they had been cultivating for the last four decades.

“Badal should be ashamed of calling Modi a Sardar as a large number of Sikhs are being ousted from Gujarat.

“The Modi government had filed a case in the apex court even after the Gujarat high court had decided in favour of the farmers. The Modi government has hired best of lawyers to ensure defeat of the farmers in the apex court,” said Bhattal.

She said if Badal had selfrespect and called himself the leader of the Sikh masses, farmers and peasantry, he should not allow Modi to enter Punjab till his government withdrew the case from the apex court.

Speaking in Gandhinagar, Badal had called Modi the greatest leader of the country. Badal had also said that Gujarat had given Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and now “Sardar” Modi to the nation.

Bhattal said though Modi appeared to have assured Badal that no Sikh farmer would be displaced, the words did not match his actions. “Modi seemed to have said this only to appease Badal since the later was there to attend the summit,” added Bhattal.
