Bathinda : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday described the BJP as a “lame duck party that has lost its self-esteem and political wisdom”.

Bajwa said that a change in portfolios of BJP Ministers would not change their integrity.

While addressing a series of meetings at Veer Colony, Ganpati Enclave,

Lal Basti and Antique Palace in Bathinda city, Bajwa said the BJP had failed to watch the interests of urban people and had no courage to resist the imposition of taxes by SAD. He said the SAD-BJP government had put a direct burden of Rs 5,000 crore per annum on the urban residents.

“On Tuesday, there was a hike in the electricity tariff by 9 paisa per unit by Powercom, but there was not a word of protest from the BJP,” Bajwa said, adding that the during the past six years of SAD-BJP regime, the cumulative increase in the power tariff had been 80 per cent, against the 22 per cent hike during the Congress rule from 2002 to 2007.

He said there had been a more than 24 per cent hike in bus fares in the past two years.

People in the big and small cities were paying the highest taxes and living in the poorest civic conditions, the Punjab Congress president said, adding that though the Local Bodies Department remained with the BJP, the control of issuing grants for development works was in the hands of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

He said Amritsar MP Navjot Sidhu and his MLA wife had exposed the anti-urban stance of SAD, adding that the allies had hatched a conspiracy against Sidhu to vacate the seat for Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia’s father.

He said that even in rural areas, grants distributed in the Sangat Darshan programme were being wasted.

Bajwa said the Badals had ruined Punjab Roadways and PRTC to promote their family business of transport.
