Chandigarh : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa, on Wednesday, said that the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has become a “safe sanctuary for the criminals of all shades” and charged the party with “harbouring criminals to further their political interests”.
In a statement issued here, Bajwa said, “Every time an Akali leader is caught red-handed in criminal activity, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal or his lieutenants in the party come out with ridiculous excuses; they either disown their party members or take the stand that party had expelled them some time back for anti-party activities.”
“There was a long list of active members of the SAD or the Youth Akali Dal, who were caught on wrong foot and later disowned and it may not be coincidence that majority of them were close confidants of a senior functionary,” he alleged.
The PPCC chief said the statement of Badal was “uncalled for”, in which he has stated that party can’t take responsibility of the activities of any individual member of the party.
“Drug smuggler Maninder Singh Bittu Aulakh, arrested by the Patiala police in synthetic drug racket, was not an ordinary member of Akali Dal.
“He was protégé of senior Akali leaders of Majha area, who could not deny their patronage to Bittu Aulakh after his pictures with them have appeared in the media.”
He said that only a day before yesterday, the Akali Dal workers allegedly beat up the agitating linemen in the presence of Chief Minister when they tried to place their demand for jobs before Bathinda Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
“Police was working under political pressure and many cases of highhandedness by Akali workers were not registered,” Bajwa further alleged, while fearing that even in the synthetic drug racket, the police would never be able to catch the big fish.
Adding that an organised drug mafia was operating in Punjab, he reiterated the demand to hand over the probe of this case to either the CBI or Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to ensure justice.
