PATTI: Linking World Cup Kabaddi with blood sports involving gladiators organised by the ancient Roman Emperors, Punjab Pradesh Cong ress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa has slammed the idea of organising the event.
He said, “When the people of Rome were unhappy with their rulers, gladiators were brought in to entertain them and to divert their attention. Similar is the strategy of the Badals.”
“The SAD-BJP government should pay attention to the fiscal health of the state instead of wasting crores of public money on the ongoing 4th World Cup Kabaddi,” said Bajwa here on Monday.
While clarifying that he was not against kabaddi, the PPCC chief, said, “A huge amount of public money is being spent on a sport which is not recognised as an international sport. It would have been better had the government paid attention to games that are recognised internationally.”
“I want to ask the Badals how is the state and people benefitting from the kabaddi world cup?” he asked.
Stating that the kabaddi extravaganza should be brought to an end, Bajwa added, “The government should turn its attention to problems plaguing the state.”
In this context, he pointed out that salaries were not being paid to government employees in time, elderly had not received pension for the last several months and government properties were being auctioned.
SEEKS PROBE IN DRUG RACKET
Addressing a public rally at Patti, Bajwa said, “All MPs from Punjab will meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and prime minister Manmohan Singh to seek a probe by the NCB into the synthetic drug racket busted by the Patiala police.” He alleged that SAD leaders and police officers were involved in drug smuggling and patronised drug racket kingpin Jagdish Bhola and his associates Maninder Singh Bittu Aulakh and Jagjit Singh Chahal.
