Chandigarh : A meeting of the Central Secretariat of the CPI will be held in New Delhi on January 4 to decide a political strategy with regard to the Lok Sabha elections. In Punjab, the CPI may tie up with the Congress, say insiders. As of now, the CPI is a part of the Sanjha Morcha, including the CPM, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) and the Peoples’ Party of Punjab.
A senior CPI leader said the party top brass had given a freed hand to its state units to select allies in their respective states. Dr Joginder Dayal, member of the national executive, said no decision had been taken yet for striking an alliance with the Congress.
He said the Sanjha Morcha would like to contest the elections as a one political entity. In the past, the CPI and the Congress have jointly contested elections in the state. These parties used to be described as natural allies in the seventies. The Congress used to leave the Bathinda constituency for the CPI.
It appears, that Sanjha Morcha’s other constituents may not be in favour of a truck with the Congress in the state.
