Faridkot : Punjab Governor Shivraj K Patil has directed the Principal Secretary, Home Affairs and Justice, to conduct a probe into the allegations levelled by a Kotkapura resident, Naresh Sehgal, against Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.
A Long battle
Naresh Sehgal had lodged a poll violence complaint against Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal in 1999
In October last, the Kotkapura police booked him on the charge of abetment to suicide
The case was registered on the complaint of Kotkapura resident Mangal Singh, father of the deceased Amritpal Singh (20)
Sehgal was the complainant in a 1999 poll violence-related case against Sukhbir. In October last, the Kotkapura police booked him on the charge of abetment to suicide. The case was registered on the complaint of local resident Mangal Singh, father of the deceased Amritpal Singh (20).
Lodged in the Faridkot Central Jail since October 13, Sehgal had approached the Governor alleging that he had been implicated in a false case to build pressure on him to withdraw his complaint against the Deputy Chief Minister. He had also demanded a CBI probe into the case. He alleged that some Akali leaders and police officers had hatched a conspiracy to engage him a false case so that he succumbed to pressure and withdrew the case against Sukhbir. In his complaint, he had claimed that the youth had died of police torture after some policemen nabbed him for eve-teasing at the Dasehra ground.
Sehgal had also sent some photographs and a video clip of the Dasehra function, which purportedly showed the police picking up the youth and taking him to the police station before his death. The case against Sukhbir is pending in a Faridkot court and it was registered on June 21, 2002, on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after Sehgal filed a writ petition.
