CHANDIGARH: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Thursday set up a five-member disciplinary committee to deal with issues of indiscipline in the Punjab Congress.

The panel will be headed by former MLA Gopal Krishan Chatrath, while former deputy speaker Jaswant Singh, former MLAs Bhag Singh and Gurkanwal Kaur, and former Punjab Youth Congress president Rana Varinder Singh will be its members, according to Shakeel Ahmed, incharge of party affairs in Punjab. The decision comes in the backdrop of rising rebellion in the Punjab Congress over the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) list which was released recently.

Earlier this week, the AICC had constituted a four-member committee to redress grievances of Congress members in a month’s time.

Immediately after the release of the list of new office-bearers and members of the PPCC executive committee on December 27, a large number of senior leaders had lodged a strong protest. Former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh and senior leaders such as Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Jagmeet Singh Brar, MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang and others had criticised the PPCC list and wanted the AICC to review it. Many office-bearers of the newly-formed body had threatened to resign from their posts, while others had even announced their resignations.
