CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on Thursday demanded President’s rule in the state under Article 356 of the Constitution, saying that there was a total failure of the state police machinery and the involvement of senior ministers and police officers in the multi-crore drug racket being run in the state.

Bajwa, along with his party colleagues, called on governor Shivraj Patil and submitted a memorandum giving details of disclosures made by arrested drug racketeer Jagdish Bhola, who had named senior minister Bikram Singh Majithia as the kingpin of the drug racket.

“Drug trafficking as a crime has national and international ramifications that would be best investigated by the CBI,” Bajwa demanded in the memorandum.

“The governor listened to the PPCC plea and assured us that he would consider the points stated in the memorandum,” a Congress spokesman said here.

The Congress also highlighted in the memorandum that “Bhola got arrested in relation to a drug racket and made shocking revelations about the involvement of senior ministers and police officials of Punjab in the drug racket.

It is imperative to point out that drug addiction and trafficking has assumed an unimaginable proportion that is plaguing the youth of Punjab and continues unabated with impunity.”

Bajwa also accused the Punjab Police of carrying out the investigations “in a completely biased manner due to the involvement of its own department and the ministers. Rather, they are the judge of their own case as the police department is subordinate to the state government.”

The party leaders who accompanied Bajwa included Charanjit Singh Channi, Kewal Singh Dhillon, Fateh Jang Bajwa, Aruna Chaudhary, Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Lakhwinder Kaur Garcha, Rampal Dhaipie, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Gurpartap Singh Mann.
