FATEHGARH SAHIB: Factionalism within Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was exposed as two groups of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) came to blows during YAD’s protest rally against Punjab congress president Partap Singh Bajwa at Fatehgarh Sahib on Wednesday.

The situation became tense and out of control outside the local district administration office here after the groups led by YAD state general secretary Harinder Pal Singh Chandumajra, son of SAD leader Prem Singh Chandumajra and YAD district president Ajay Singh Libra exchanged fisticuffs over holding the mike to address gathering.

Libra is son of another senior SAD leader Ranjit Singh Libra.

The rally turned out be a cause for major embarrassment for YAD and SAD as it had to be suspended after the violence.

YAD leader Gurpreet Singh from Libra group received serious injuries while members of Chandumajra group broke windowpanes of his car.

According to eyewitnesses, the clash broke out when some of the members of the group led by Chandumajra tried to snatch mike from Libra, who was delivering vote of thanks speech

Libra protested the action and exchanged heated arguments with Chandumajra following which the former threw the mike at the latter. Both the leaders also pulled off each others’ turbans.

The members of the two groups also attacked each other. In the meantime, Libra along with his group left the spot but Chandumajra group chased injured Gurpreet and thrashed him brutally.
