AMETHI: A day after handshakes with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday hinted that the candidature of Kumar Vishwas from the Amethi constituency might not make any difference to him.

“Others may come and go but I will stay for life in Amethi.”

Although Gandhi was seen meeting people, interacting with local media persons, addressing workers of self-help groups (SHGs) and flagging off water tankers to rural areas, he did not make a direct mention of the AAP candidate.

“This is my family. I have a relationship of love with the people here. I will not go from here. Others may come and go but I will be for life in Amethi,” said Gandhi in an informal chat with local media persons.

Later, after flagging off water tankers, Gandhi said there could not be any development in UP till the Congress was brought back to power here.

“We are very strong in Rae Bareli and Amethi,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi also summoned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials for the poor condition of the road, recently declared a National Highway, connecting the constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli and constructed at nearly ` 57 crore. He also asked Union minister for road transport and highways Oscar Fernandes to visit the place in a week, ensure that the road was reconstructed and action was taken against those responsible for its poor condition.

Earlier in a talk with local media persons Gandhi blamed non-Congress governments and caste-based parties for the current state of Uttar Pradesh.

“The Centre sends a large chunk of funds. Uttar Pradesh, however, has gone down in terms of development during the tenure of non-Congress governments,” he said.

About his not being named the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Gandhi said it believed in democratic traditions.
