Chandigarh :Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira today sought the transfer of Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini saying that he was facing criminal charges in a kidnapping case.

Khaira said Saini must be transferred to ensure a free and fair election in Punjab.

In his complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Khaira alleged that the DGP had been chargesheeted by a CBI Special Court in Delhi for kidnap, abduction and disappearance of three persons under Sections 342, 343, 364, 120-B IPC. The said charges were framed against him in November 2006 after the investigation was handed over to the CBI by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he said.

Khaira said Saini enjoyed a close proximity with the Badals. "Immediately after assuming power in 2012, the ruling dispensation handed over the top police post to Saini by ignoring seniority of five IPS officers."

He alleged Saini was instrumental in victimising Capt Amarinder Singh and several other senior Congress leaders by registering false and frivolous criminal cases against them. The DGP also got cases of corruption against the Badals withdrawn by pressuring witnesses, Khaira alleged in his complaint.

Raminder Singh, Chief Electoral Officer, confirmed that he had received Khaira's complaint against the DGP. H said he had forwarded the same to the Election Commission of India.
