Amritsar:SAD-BJP candidate from Amritsar Arun Jaitley kickstarted his election campaign from Attari, the border area segment of the Lok Sabha constituency, on Friday.

Jaitley, who was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, addressed a massive rally being organised by Cabinet Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike.

While addressing the rally, Jaitley said that to contest from Amritsar constituency was a great opportunity for him and he believed that he would succeed in winning the confidence of the public.

While talking about the hardships being faced by border masses, Jaitley said that he had come to know various woes of border villagers, but the present Union government had failed to solve such problems.

“The Congress runs a partial government and it is one of the major reasons that overall development of the country is not possible during its tenure,” Jaitley said. He said that multi-crore scams were reported during the recent tenure of the UPA government, but UPA had failed to spend money on the development of border areas of Punjab.

Jaitley said that it was poor governance of the UPA government that its leaders were reluctant to contest the coming elections. He said that Congress leaders were making lame excuses so that they could keep themselves away from elections and the party would collapse in the polls and record a historic defeat.

He said the BJP-led NDA would form the next government and special attention towards the issues of border areas would be paid.

Before Jaitley, Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia addressed the rally and appealed to the public to elect Jaitley in the coming polls. He also criticised the UPA government and said that it had paid no heed to the long-pending demands of border areas.

He said the Congress-led UPA would face a clear defeat in the polls and this was the reason why many of its leaders were hesitating to contest the elections.

Majithia said that after winning the elections, Jaitley would get a top portfolio in the NDA government and then he would pay special attention towards the growth of Punjab and its masses.

Similarly, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal appealed to the public to cast their vote in favour of Jaitley. He said that Jaitley is the son of Punjab and has strong relations with the state.

Badal said that Jaitley would mark his victory with a huge margin and he would contribute a lot for the betterment of Punjab.

The Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency goes to polls on April 30, along with 12 other seats of Punjab. The filing of nomination papers is to commence on April 2 and end on April 9. After scrutiny on the following day, withdrawals would be allowed till April 12 when the final picture of contestants for the 13 Lok Sabha seats would emerge.

Jaitley said if his party was voted to power it would address the problems faced by farmers living on the border, besides considering their hardships at the time of cultivation of crops.

The BJP leader said if the NDA got absolute majority, it would form the government at the Centre under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
