Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa, on Tuesday, said that Gurdaspur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Vinod Khanna had earlier ‘failed’ to meet the aspirations of the people when they had elected him to represent them in the Lok Sabha.

In a statement issued here, Bajwa, who is seeking re-election from Gurdaspur constituency, said Khanna was a ‘paratrooper’ from Mumbai dropped again by the BJP despite the fact that the people had ‘rejected’ him in the last election as they wanted someone their own to serve them and be with them.

He asserted only a person from that area and region could fully understand the problems of the people and come up to their aspirations which was imperative for taking the constituency to higher tangent of development.

Bajwa said that his family had been serving the area for years and he was conversant with each and every nook and corner of the constituency, and its problems. “My efforts all along as the MP from Gurdaspur have been to bring in big ticket projects,” he claimed.

He said that the Akali Dal-BJP alliance in the state was ‘rattled’ by anti-incumbency. “The BJP is trying to neutralise the same by bringing in leaders like Arun Jaitley and Khanna. However, these leaders will fail to deliver as the people have already made up their mind and understood the nefarious designs of the BJP in general and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in particular,” Bajwa expressed.

Recalling that after having been anointed as the PM candidate, he said that Modi had organised his very first rally at Pathankot but it had failed to generate any wave. He castigated the BJP for already divesting its candidates of the basic right of electing the Prime Minister in case they get elected by announcing as the choice for the highest executive office.

“PM is elected by the MPs and the anointment of Modi was violative of this very basic norm and hence undemocratic,” he mentioned.
