BATHINDA: The joint candidate of the Congress and the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) Manpreet Singh Badal has said that he could contest the Lok Sabha poll on the Congress symbol to “destroy the kingdom of the Badal family”.

Facing technical glitches over his party’s symbol- kite, and pressure from Congress workers’ to contest polls on a Congress ticket, Manpreet said that the nation was above the party for him. He, however, maintained that his first preference would be his own party’s symbol.

HT was the first to report, on Saturday, about Manpreet’s dilemma on the poll symbol.

“We are going to win this election with a big margin. If contested on ‘kite’, it will naturally be advantageous for us as we would then have the kite as a permanent symbol. But the flip-side is once the nomination is accepted and we are allotted the symbol, we would have only 18 days to publicise it,” said Manpreet.

When reminded that Badals will have another issue in their hands to attack him if he contested on the Congress symbol, he said, “CM Parkash Singh Badal became an MLA on the Congress symbol in his first term. To destroy the kingdom of the Badals, this rule of oppression, we will use any weapon that we need, even the Congress symbol,” he said.

“But our first preference will be kite. Subhas Chandra Bose joined hands with the Japanese to fight British,” said Manpreet.
