CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira has lodged a complaint with chief election commissioner (CEC) VS Sampath, demanding registration of a criminal case and immediate arrest of Punjab revenue minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia for “trying to incite violence against Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh”.
A copy of the complaint was also given to Punjab chief electoral officer (CEO) VK Singh, who has a sought report from the district administration. “We are also taking legal opinion on the matter,” said VK Singh.
The complaint refers to the “highly provocative speech” made by Majithia on March 30 against Amarinder, in which Majithia said he would “teach a lesson to Congress workers by twisting their necks, if they dare to support Capt Amarinder Singh”. The speech was made in the presence of the Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and the BJP’s candidate from Amritsar Arun Jaitely.
“Majithia ’sut terances cannot be dismissed away… he has a criminal record of intimidating and arm-twisting people, particularly his political opponents. Besides, he had said similar things in 2012 in Punjab assembly, where he had gone to the extent of saying that he was ready to chop off Capt Amarinder Singh’s head and put it at Badal’s feet,” added Khaira.
The Congress leader also pointed that Majithia, who is president of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), “has been patronising and shielding all sorts of criminals and gangsters in Punjab, and recently he was named as the kingpin of drug trafficking in the state, by druglord Jagdish Bhola, now in police custody”.
“You are requested to summon and examine the video recording of Majithia’s provocative speech at March 30 at Majitha and take strong criminal action,” demanded Khaira.
