Sangatpura (Moga) : In retaliation against the attack on an Akali leader’s son at Sangatpura village of Moga on April 30, a group of Akali workers late last night allegedly opened fire on a Congress worker of this village, leaving him seriously injured.
Roop Singh was rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot. From there, he was shifted to the PGIMR at Chandigarh.
A senior police official said a few persons reportedly jumped over the boundary wall of Roop Singh’s house and opened fire on him. No other family member was injured, said the victim's wife, Baldev Kaur.
Jatinder Singh, SHO, said the police had registered a criminal case against former sarpanch Sukhdev Singh, Jagsir Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Inderjit Singh and some unidentified persons.
The situation in Sangatpura village is tense. The district administration has tightened security there. It was a curfew-like situation in the village throughout the day with hardly anybody moving out of his house.
Jaswinder Singh, son of SGPC member Gurmail Singh, and his associate Jagsir Singh were injured in a clash between the Congress and Akali workers outside a polling booth in this village on April 30. Jaswinder received injuries on his head. Jagsir, who was discharged from the hospital after first-aid, was believed to be behind the shootout last night. The district Congress president, Darshan Singh Brar, blamed both Jaswinder and Jagsir for the attack.
Accusing the police of trying to protect them, he demanded that the assailants be arrested within 24 hours or else the Congress would launch a stir against the SAD-BJP Government.
