CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday expressed shock over the medical cases reported in HT that reveal the brutality of the drug-addict men in Punjab who abuse their infant and young daughters sexually.

Bajwa said substance abuse had spread as virus in Punjab and the easy availability of drugs had worsened the situation. “Gruesomeness has crept into Punjabi society that was once known for pro g ressive outlook,” he added.

Incest should be punished with strongest possible punishment, said the Congress leader, adding: “Nothing can be more shocking in civilised society. The inhuman acts force us to hang our heads in shame.”

“Development is not good roads, flyovers and international airports alone. The development of human resource also has to be given priority,” said Bajwa, putting the onus of curbing drug and alcohol addiction and making people aware on the state government.

He called for a united political effort against drugs. “After we checked the trend of killing girl child in the womb to a large extent, we now are faced with a new crime against her,” he added.
