Ferozepur: Raising questions over dual standards of the police in the country, Leader of Opposition and Congress candidate from the Ferozepur parliamentary constituency urged the Election Commission of India to register cases against BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah for violating rules and regulation in Varanasi.
Drawing an analogy with Punjab, he said that if Punjab Police could book Congress workers for their peaceful demonstration then why the police did not register cases against Jaitley and Shah.
Jakhar also highlighted various cases registered against Congress workers throughout the state. In this regard, Jakhar has also written a letter to Chief Election Commission (CEC) V S Sampath and given details of all FIRs registered by the Punjab Police. In the letter, he has mentioned five FIRs — two at Malout city, one at Jallalabad and two in Gurdaspur district — registered by the Punjab Police against Congress workers.
In his complaint, he also gave details of two FIRs registered against Akali workers. He said that the police did not take fair action against the accused. He clearly mentioned the case registered at Bagha Purana of Moga district, where the police registered the case against Akali workers merely as a formality. The local police and accused were trying to threaten Congress workers to withdraw their complaints, he added.
In an another case, Jakhar mentioned case of Major Singh, a Congress worker and polling agent at booth number 126 of Raja Sansi of the Amritsar parliamentary constituency. A few BJP and Akali workers were casting bogus votes when Major Singh tried to stop them but he was beaten up. Though it was an attempt to murder case, the police only registered a case under Section 323.
He said that Punjab government misused its power and tried to influence voters by different means. “The Election Commission of India should thoroughly investigate all such cases of political vendetta,” Jakhar added.
