The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is preparing to corner the ruling SAD-BJP alliance on property tax, the drug and sand mafia, the ‘pitiable’ condition of cities and non-payment of dues amounting to Rs 186 crore to cane growers.
The Congress legislators will sit in dharna in front of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's residence here on June 23 to demand withdrawal of property tax, action against the ‘big fish’ involved in the drug trade and immediate payment of dues to cane growers.
The MLAs will also seek a CBI probe into the "siphoning" of MNREGA funds allotted to the state.
At least 31 Congress MLAs participated in the first CLP meeting after the Lok Sabha poll at Punjab Bhawan here today. The meeting comes a month ahead of the Budget session scheduled to begin on July 15
Sunil Jakhar, CLP Leader, rubbished reports on his "differences" with the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief, Partap Singh Bajwa. "We have got together here to discuss the problems of the people. There is no politics in it," explained Jakhar.
Jakhar and other senior Congress leaders, including Rana Gurjit Singh, Parminder Singh Pinki, Tarlochan Singh Soondh and Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, targeted the Chief Minister. " Badal senior, who has been camping in Talwandi Sabo for the past 10 days, must withdraw property tax,” said Pinki. “Farmers are committing suicide. But the Badal Government remains indifferent to their plight. Cane farmers are yet to be paid their dues totaling Rs 186 crore. No ‘big fish’ in the drug trade has been nabbed. Instead, the police has been targeting addicts. Students are not getting scholarship money in time,” he alleged.
