SAY INCREASE IN FARE TO NOT ONLY AFFECT PEOPLE TRAVELLING IN TRAINS BUT ALSO SPIKE PRICES OF COMMODITIES

JALANDHAR: Congress workers on Thursday held a protest against the hike in rail fare by BJP-led National Democratic Alliance gover nment at the Centre and burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Members of Jalandhar rural and urban district Congress committees raised slogans against the Modi government. They said the increase in fares would not only affect the people travelling in trains but it would also increase the prices of essential commodities.

Addressing the protesting workers, district Congress committee (rural) president and former MLA Jagbir Brar alleged that the increasing the rail fares by 14.2% and freight charges by 6.5% could not be justified.

“The Centre should immediately withdraw the hike in the interests of of the common man,” said Brar.

He said that before coming to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised better days ahead but now his decisions were just opposite to what he promised during elections.

He claimed that Modi had cheated the people of the country by increasing the rail fare.

Brar also accused the government of deliberately increasing import duty on sugar which spiked the commodity price.

“The NDA government has done this to benefit certain sugar lobbies in India whereas the common man will have to bear the brunt of this,” he said.
