CHANDIGARH: With Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal promising to clear pending payment of sugarcane farmers and social welfare schemes within a week, Congress Legislature Par ty (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar on Monday claimed a moral victory for the Punjab Congress. Jakhar, along with state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa and 32 party MLAs, had staged a protest demonstration outside Badal’s residence here on June 23 to press for these demands.

Jakhar said the demonstration had forced the state government to accede to the demands about clearing pending payments of cane growers and social welfare schemes for the underprivileged.

He said the Congress would soon launch another protest demonstration to force the SAD-BJP government to roll back property tax imposed before the Lok Sabha polls. “We will also ask the state government to catch the big fish whose names have cropped up in the multi-crore drug racket during the course of investigations by the police as well as the Enforcement Directorate,” he said.
