Congress bid to gherao Badal in Sangrur foiled

Sangrur : Around 30 Congress workers, led by Punjab Youth Congress general secretary Poonam Kangra, were taken into preventive custody today at Mahavir Chowk near the Civil Hospital here while they were heading to gherao Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The Chief Minister was on a visit to the Civil Hospital here to inspect the de-addiction centre.

The Congress workers wanted to gherao the Chief Minister to lodge their protest against the police action on the Dalits of Balad Kalan village at Bhawanigarh on June 27. Their other demands were unconditional release of the 41 arrested Dalits and withdrawal of the police case registered against them.

Station House Officer Harinder Singh said the protesters were taken into preventive custody and let off only after the departure of the Chief Minister from the city.
