Chandigarh : Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday accused the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre of running away from serious and accountable debate in Parliament on the crucial issue of unprecedented rise in the food prices.
He said that instead the government only wanted and expected the members to make the ritualistic statements and make the matter end then and there only.
The Congress Deputy Leader disclosed that he had submitted an adjournment motion to the Speaker for debating the unprecedented rise in the prices of essential food commodities under Section 56 (of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha).
He said, but the government wanted the discussion under Section 193 of the rules
Capt Amarinder said that under Section 56, the government is supposed to make a statement on the issue under discussion which can later also put into vote in the Lok Sabha.
On the other hand, he added, there are no such obligations under Section 193 as the government is neither obliged to make a statement nor can the motion be put on vote. The senior Congress leader maintained that the government’s insistence on Section 193 only reflected its lack of seriousness and sincerity towards the rising prices of the food commodities.
Giving details, he disclosed that during the last one and half month since the NDA came to power, the prices of most of the food items had risen by about 80 to 100 per cent which calls for urgent attention.
