Amritsar : Expressing concern over drought-like situation prevailing in Punjab, Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh today asked the state government to draw up a contingency plan to help the farmers.
He urged the government to order a girdawri in time to assess losses to the farmers so that they could be adequately compensated. He said it was high time the government introduced a crop insurance scheme since the matter had been pending for a long time.
In a press note issued here today, Amarinder said there had been a deficit monsoon so far. He said huge area across the state, particularly along the border belts like Amritsar, was facing drought-like conditions and it was the responsibility of the government to draw up a plan to provide relief.
The former Chief Minister said with the state government having "friendly relations" with the Centre, there should be no problem in getting a contingency plan approved and funded on time.
"Earlier they (the Akalis) had the standard excuse of accusing the Centre of non-cooperation. Now with the NDA in power, they must not have any problem," he said.
