Amritsar : Former chief minister and MP from Amritsar, Capt Amarinder Singh urged Akal Takht to remain above politics to maintain the highest sanctity of this sacred institution and give its blessings to the newly constituted Haryana SGPC, besides revoking the excommunication of three prominent Sikh leaders from that state. “Akal Takht is way above politics and should remain like this,” he remarked.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Capt Amarinder said, “With all humility I am saying that there was no violation of the ‘maryada’ in constituting the Haryana SGPC as it was very much the demand of Sikhs there.”

The former chief minister said, “Akal Takht had done well by preventing the congregation of the Sikhs at Amritsar and Karnal as that would only have antagonised the community members against each other. Like it stood up to the occasion in the interest of the community, it is widely hoped that it would not be seen to be influenced by anyone.”

He urged Akal Takht to shower its blessings on the newly constituted Haryana SGPC as it was the long pending wish and demand of Sikhs there. “The Sikh community was relieved over the intervention of Akal Takht in pre-empting the confrontation among the members and now it expects to take it further by blessing the Haryana SGPC to carry forward its mandate”, he said.

Capt Amarinder pointed out that Haryana SGPC has the unanimous and widespread approval of Sikhs in Punjab, Haryana, across India and abroad as well. Acknowledging the sentiments of the Sikhs across everywhere it would be in the highest interests of the community that the Akal Takht should give its blessing to the Haryana committee and also revokes the excommunication of three senior and prominent Sikh leaders who are the representatives of the Haryana Sikhs.
