PATIALA: Deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday slammed former external affairs minister and brother-in-law Natwar Singh on the issue of his controversial book saying he had breached the trust of the Gandhi family.
Amarinder also defended Rahul Gandhi for asking mother Sonia Gandhi not to take up the post of the Prime Minister.
Amarinder, whose sister is married to Natwar Singh, said he (Natwar) was wrong in going public with the information shared with him in confidence.
Amarinder initially declined to comment on the book saying he wouldn’t comment on news reports. However, he later defended Rahul Gandhi and criticised Natwar without naming him.
“There is nothing wrong if a son tells his mother to stay away from danger,” he said while defending Rahul. Amarinder said he (Natwar) had blamed Rahul for asking his mother not to become the PM. “As a son, what he said to his mother (Sonia) was nothing wrong, as he had lost his father and grandmother and was worried about his mother,” Amarinder said.
Without naming Natwar, he criticised him for the breach in trust of the Gandhi family. “It’s wrong on his (Natwar’s) part,” Amarinder said.
“I am at fault, if you tell me something in confidence, and next day I disclose it to the media. One is honoured when someone reposes confidence in you and shares a close secret. You are bound not to share it with anyone,” he said. However, he said he would make a detailed comment only after reading the book.
BAJWA CONDEMNS NATWAR TOO
Meanwhile, state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday condemned Natwar Singh. Bajwa said Natwar was trying to sell his autobiography by attacking Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He said it was nothing short of treachery on his part to reveal privileged information and conversations.
“For a person who takes pride in having worked under Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi to stoop to such a level for personal and political gains is shocking in the extreme,” Bajwa said.
