Amritsar: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh has condemned the alleged brutal use of force on the peaceful ETT teachers by the police.

Amarinder also warned the police official responsible for the lathicharge against “abusing his power”.

In a statement, Amarinder said, “The ETT teachers should have been allowed to hold a peaceful demonstration. The police officer who led the contingent resorted to unprovoked use of force, probably to please his political bosses.” The MP assured the teachers that he would ensure that the officer was brought to book.

Amarinder alleged he was the same official who was responsible for the killing of a protesting farmer a few months ago in Amritsar, and that “he should have been removed than being assigned the sensitive job of dealing with teachers protesting for their genuine demands”.

“This is extreme authoritarian behaviour of the government, which is using some of its loyalist police officials to resort to excesses on peaceful demonstrators. A peaceful protest is everybody’s democratic right, but the Akalis are not only denying the same to the people but even gagging their voice,” he said.
