CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday asked the party to “snub the forces of disruption, distraction and sabotage” by winning the two assembly byelections coming up in the state.

It was the time for the party to work for the common goal of retaining the Patiala and Talwandi Sabo seats, he said, adding: “The task is not insurmountable, keeping in view the public anger against the mafia rule, brazen corruption, and drug menace.”

“The attempts to divide the party have not come for the first time. Our rivals do politics for immediate gains, which is why the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has reverted to the panthic agenda,” the state Congress leader further said.

Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) constituents had revolted, the breaking of the Akali-BJP combine could not be ruled out, as that would be the only option left with the minor ally when it was pushed to the limit, said Bajwa, adding that the Congress would not base its politics on negativity.

“The Akalis have a history of creating tension when in trouble but the Congress is prepared to take them on in the Patiala and Talwandi Sabo byelections,” the Punjab Congress president added.
