CHANDIGARH: Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday criticised the Punjab government for awarding ‘paltry sums’ to the winners of the Commonwealth Games.
He said the state government was playing a “cruel joke” on the players. In a statement here, Amarinder said it was disgusting on part of the state government to announce ` 7 lakh, ` 5 lakh and ` 3 lakh for the gold, silver and bronze medallists, respectively. He said this only reflected the casual attitude of the government towards sports and sportspersons.
He said that during his tenure as CM when Sunita Rani had won the gold medal in athletics in the Asian Games, his government had given her ` 1 crore and appointed her DSP in Punjab Police.
“Show some grace to the young boys and girls who have done us proud,” Amarinder told the state government.
