CHANDIGARH: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday condemned the police lathicharge on protesting teachers in Amritsar on Sunday, and demanded unconditional withdrawal of cases registered against them.

In a statement issued here, Bajwa said, “Letting loose police repression against peaceful protesters was against all canons of democratic norms and it betrayed anti-people attitude of the chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his government.”

He pointed out that the Sikhs get agitated when told by securitymen to remove their turbans for check-up at international airports abroad; but in Punjab, policemen themselves were showing disrespect to turbans and this had not happened for the first time.

He extended support to demands of the elementary teachers who want to be shifted from under zila parishads and municipal councils to the ambit of the state education department.
