Akali leader, aide held with drugs

MOGA: A leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and his aide were arrested for allegedly carrying poppy husk, heroin and habit-forming drugs near Jawahar Singh Wala village under Nihal Singh Wala subdivision in this district on Tuesday.
The arrested leader, Karamjit Singh Karma of Rauke Kalan, is the former circle president of the Youth Akali Dal and former member panchayat of Rauke Kalan. According to information, Karma has been running a medical store in his village for 10 years.
Police said they had received a tip-off that two Scorpio-borne men were carrying poppy husk, heroin and other drugs for selling in the Badhni Kalan area. “As soon as the police received the information, a special team raided the place and arrested Karma and his aide Bhupinder Singh Rauke,” the police said.
Two months ago when deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harpal Singh Randhawa had organised a public meeting at Badhni Kalan police station for hearing the grievances of the locals, senior Congress leader Jaswant Singh Pappi of Rauke Kalan had complained to the DSP, alleging that Karma was involved in drug trade.
Sources said that following that the police had raided Rauke Kalan village but due to political pressure had to return empty handed from Karma’s medical shop.
Jaswinder Singh, in-charge, Moga narcotic and drug cell, said, “The police have recovered 62 kg of poppy husk, 3 gm heroin, 1,500 tablets of Alprex and 280 tablets of Carisom from Karma and Bhupinder.
The police have registered a case against Karma and Bhupinder under the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho tropic Substances Act at Badhni Kalan police station. “We are investigating the matter and hope more clues will come to light soon,” said the police official.
