Amritsar : Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and local MP Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the holy city asking the police to take immediate remedial measures. He was reacting to the broad daylight abduction of a child in Ranjeet Avenue on Wednesday.

He expressed his sympathies with the parents of the abducted child while at the same time hoping and praying for his safe return. “I can understand your pain and fear about the safety of your child,” he told the parents in a message, while adding, “I want to assure you that I am with you in this hour of crisis.”

Capt Amarinder spoke to the Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Aulakh conveying his serious concern over the broad daylight abduction of a school-going child from his residence. The commissioner told him that the police were on the job and were hopeful of cracking the case soon.

The Congress leader pointed out, this was not an isolated incident but one in a long series.

He said, earlier there was an incident of firing in the same area, besides an unsuccessful bid to abduct a girl and the snatching of a car at gunpoint. He said, the police had not been able to crack any of these cases so far.

Capt Amarinder warned that the law and order situation cannot be allowed to drift like that as there was sense of fear and insecurity growing among the people of this holy city.

“I have been receiving dozens of telephone calls from the panic-stricken people of the city saying this incident had shaken them,” he disclosed.

The former state Chief Minister hoped that better sense prevails over Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who has been otherwise keeping himself busy with the matters other than those related to Punjab, so that he starts paying attention to the affairs of the state lest the situation goes from bad to worse.
