LUDHIANA: The Punjab government will revive or merge over 500 district-level cooperative societies which have failed to perform, said state cooperation minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
There are over 3,500 cooperative societies in the state.
While laying the foundation stone of a new automated dairy unit and butter plant to be constructed at a cost of ₹104 crore at the Verka milk plant on Ferozepur Road here on Sunday, the minister said the government is also planning to provide multiple services at cooperative societies after a tie-up with companies such as Walmart. He said efforts are being made to improve the financial condition of the cooperative societies in the state.
The new automated dairy unit would increase the capacity of the milk plant to 10 lakh litres per day, he added.
The minister warned employees of cooperative societies against corrupt practices and also urged the people to file complaints against people selling spurious dairy products.
WILL ASK NABARD TO GIVE LOANS THROUGH MILKFED: RANDHAWA
Randhawa said he would meet representatives of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and demand that loans for purchasing cows be given through Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (Milkfed). He said a system would be worked out where loan instalments will be deducted when farmers come sell their dairy products to Milkfed.
TRIAL ON TO INSTALL JAMMERS IN JAILS
To check the use of mobile phones by inmates, the government is conducting a trial run to install jammers in state jails, said Randhawa.
Speaking on the Kartarpur corridor foundation stone row, Randhawa said he has sought information from the National Highways Authority of India questioning how the name of the Badals was there on the plaque. “I will move court if denied information,” said the minister.
In November last year, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu laid the digital foundation stone of the Kartarpur project at Dera Baba Nanak after the physical foundation stone was removed following Randhawa’s objection to the names of Akali leaders – former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Badal – on the plaque.
Randhawa covered his and the CM’s names with a black tape to avoid sharing space with Akali leaders.
