PATHANKOT: Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Friday revived the vital Shahpur Kandi Dam project that has the potential to curb the water flow of river waters to Pakistan.
The project is being constructed on the Ravi river, 11 km downstream of Ranjit Sagar Dam Project and 7 km upstream of Madhopur Head Works.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, the chief minister said the ₹2,073-crore project, construction on which is all set to restart soon, would reduce water flowing into Pakistan drastically and help save the critical water resources of the state.
The project has been revived with the chief minister’s personal efforts in order to resolve all pending issues with the Jammu and Kashmir government.
In 1995, the then Prime Minister Narsimha Rao had laid the foundation stone of this project, but it later hit a roadblock and the construction came to a halt.
Announcing that the project would now be completed within three years, the chief minister said it would result in increased irrigation of 5,000 hectares across the state.
The project will also help the Ranjit Sagar Dam, also known as the Thein Dam, to generate electricity at its full capacity of 600 MW.
LAUNCHES ₹1K-CRORE PEPSICO PLANT
Later, chief minister Amarinder Singh also inaugurated a ₹1,000-crore bottling plant project of American multinational PepsiCo being set up over an area measuring 41 acre at the Industrial Growth Centre in Pathankot.
