Shiromani Akali Dal headed by Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday suffered a jolt when a relative of former chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and a prominent leader of Shiromani Akali Dal, Harsukhinder Singh Bubby Badal joined SAD (Taksali). Bubby is Parkash Singh Badal’s nephew and Sukhbir Badal’s cousin.
Bubby along with several of his supporters joined SAD (Taksali) in the presence of party president and MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura. Welcoming Bubby into the party fold, Brahmpura appointed Bubby Badal as president of Youth Akali Dal (Taksali).
Addressing the media, Bubby said he had been working in the SAD for the past 25 years, thus devoting a big part of his life to the party. But when it came to rewarding him in recognition of his services, he was always ignored, with the result that he failed to secure party ticket for contesting even a municipal election. He was given to understand that since there were already too many Badals active in politics, there was no scope to adjust one more like him. But when it came to occupying ministerial berths at the centre and in state, the Badal family always found an argument to justify them.
He also complained that as the role of Bikram Singh Majithia increased in party affairs, there was a corresponding decline in the role of the traditional taksali Akali leaders like him in the Akali Dal.
The proverbial last straw on the camel’s back was provided by SAD’s announcement that it would boycott the Special Investigation Team constituted by the government to enquire into the incidents of sacrilege. How could a party which swore by Guru Granth Sahib refuse to cooperate with SIT which was trying unearth the conspiracy behind the incidents of sacrilege in the state.
He said reputation of IG Kunwar Partap Singh as a member of the SIT as an upright and honest officer was impeccable. By raising fingers at him, SAD leadership had exposed itself. He also said that SIT should not allow an impression to gain ground that it was working under pressure from the Congress government.
He also alleged that Majithia was getting protection from his “chachaji” (uncle) Capt Amarinder Singh in the drug smuggling case.
