Sangrur : Though the Congress has not announced him its candidate for LS elections from Sangrur, senior vice-president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Kewal Singh Dhillon has started campaigning. Late on Sunday evening, he attended a programme at a club in Sunam and sought support of residents to bring development in the district.
Sources in the party said Dhillon had been conducting regular meetings with area leaders at his Chandigarh residence. He had been conducting meetings in Barnala for the last two months but in Sangrur district, he started campaigning last evening.
“I have no problem with Cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla. All such rumours are being spread by our political opponents to spread confusion,” Dhillon told The Tribune late last evening.
After the defeat of Vijay Inder Singla in the 2014 MP elections, his supporters had raised fingers at Dhillon and alleged that he conspired against Singla which had led to his defeat. Now, since Singla is a Cabinet minister, he has refused to contest MP elections and Dhillon is trying his best to get the ticket, said sources.
From Sangrur, AAP has announced Bhagwant Mann as its candidate while SAD (Amritsar) has announced Simranjit Singh Mann as its candidate. Both SAD and the Congress are yet to announce their candidates.
“Singla has brought many developmental projects in Sangrur like the PGI, a cancer hospital and many others and I admire him for his positive approach. But, Sangrur needs big a industrial house for employment and I will ensure that after I win the elections,” said Dhillon.
About his chances of getting ticket, he claimed that in all surveys of PPCC and All India Congress Committee, his name was on the top.
