Court summons ex-Akali MLA, 3 cops in Kotkapura firing case

FARIDKOT: A court of judicial magistrate (first class), Ekta Uppal, issued summons to former Akali MLA Mantar Singh Brar, then Ludhiana additional deputy commissioner (ADCP) Paramjit Singh Pannu, then Kotkapura deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Baljit Singh and then Kotkapura city station house officer (SHO) Gurdeep Singh Pandher in the Kotkapura firing case after they failed to appear before the court on Saturday.

The Faridkot court adjourned the hearing in the case to July 12.

Suspended inspector general of police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranangal, an accused in the police firing incident of October 2015, on Saturday appeared before the court while former Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) Charanjit Singh Sharma sought exemption from the hearing on the basis of his medical condition, which was allowed by the court.

The special investigation team (SIT) probing the police firing cases had filed a 2,000-page chargesheet against six accused in the case last month. Mantar, Umranangal, Pannu and Charanjit have already secured prearrest bail while Baljit and Pandher’s bail applications were rejected by court.

A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) and under the Arms Act was registered against them on August 7, 2018. Later, the SIT added a more sections of the Indian Penal Code including 120-B (criminal conspiracy).
