Chandigarh : Attacking the government over the death of a girl due to consuming contaminated water in Lehragaga, a senior Congress leader and former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Friday said that she had raised the issue of contaminated water supply to the residents of her constituency on the floor of the Vidhan Sabha as well and despite assurance given by the minister concerned, the problem has become acute.
In a statement here, she reminded that she had apprised the state government regarding supply of contaminated water in several areas of her constituency through a question during the last Assembly session, following which the minister concerned had assured on the floor of the House to do the needful at the earliest, but nothing has been done even after the span of three months.
“Over the months, the residents were being supplied unfiltered water deemed contaminated with chemicals that caused water-borne diseases. Now, the problem has become even more acute due to mixing of sewerage in drinking water and that contaminated water was coming in the taps for drinking purposes,” Bhattal revealed, while stating that daily several persons were falling ill in Lehragaga area and were referred to Patiala and Sangrur hospitals for treatment.
Expressing serious concern over the issue, the former chief minister urged the state government to take immediate steps in the matter. “The death of a girl made evident the government inaction,” she added.
